Role

Coordinator of the Citizenship main subject strand in the BA Primary Education and Teaching and Professor of Applied Social Policy.

Experience

Chris was formerly a senior teacher in a comprehensive school in Wiltshire and for many years he ran the University of Chichester's MA(Ed) programme.  He writes extensively on the educational experiences of ethnic minorities outside the larger urban areas, a subject on which he has written three books, edited a further three and co-wrote the DCSF guidelines on countering racist bullying. He has also written a book for teachers about social inequalities more generally. He has led professional development events in three quarters of English education authorities.

Chris is a frequent keynote speaker at teachers’ and other conferences and has been an invited speaker on his work in Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Romania, Denmark, Sweden and the Czech Republic and has some work published in Spanish and German.

Interests

Outside the field of education he has been commissioned to research the experiences of minority ethnic groups in Sussex, in Dorset and in Herefordshire, the scale and impact of eastern European immigration in Sussex, as well as a feasibility study on the establishment of a race crime reporting line.

He has a particular interest in making the complex social arguments about race and difference accessible to young people, so he has devised a series of websites aimed at adolescents. Britkid and Coastkid are the best known of these, but he has also been involved in similar work in Sweden, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Spain.
