Role

Carol is a Senior lecturer in Primary Education.

Experience

After completing her initial teacher training at Edge Hill College Carol has taught for over twenty five years in mainstream secondary, middle and primary schools in both rural and urban settings across the country. These include both secondary and primary schools across Merseyside, secondary and middle schools in outer London, middle and primary schools in Portsmouth and most recently a local Bognor junior school.

Carol joined the Primary Education Team in January 2009. Prior to this she worked on a part-time basis, whilst still teaching, for Sussex University as a tutor and assessor on their Primary Graduate Teacher Programme.

Since joining the university Carol has been able to pursue her interest and enthusiasm for primary mathematics. She is a member of both the undergraduate and post graduate primary mathematics teams. Carol also teaches professional studies which enables her to draw on her experience as both a class teacher and a manager in a wide variety of school settings. Carol is also passionate about the key principles that underpin creativity in the curriculum. She welcomed the opportunity recently to be a member of the West Sussex creativity project and to share this experience and expertise.

Carol’s academic qualifications include a B.Ed(hons) specialising in mathematics, science and PE across the 8-13 age range from the University of Lancaster. Recently Carol was awarded an MA(Ed) from the University of Chichester. During her MA she specialised in all aspects of inclusion, the focus for her dissertation being the underachievement of girls in mathematics. Carol also holds the National Professional Qualification for Headship which covers all aspects of primary education and helps inform all aspects of the work she undertakes in university.

Interests

All aspects of inclusion is an area that interests her greatly and one she intends to pursue further academically in the near future. Throughout her teaching career she has maintained a strong interest in the effective mentorship of both trainee and newly qualified teachers. She now welcomes the opportunity to further develop this expertise whilst based at the university. She is particularly interested in building a strong partnership between the university and local schools that is mutually supportive in providing the very best in experiences for trainee teachers.

Carol enjoys nothing more than spending time with her family and enjoying this beautiful part of England that she feels so fortunate to live in. She serves on the governing body of a local Bognor junior school.
