Experience

Andy has worked at the University of Chichester since 2007.

Before his appointment, Andy worked for the Association for Physical Education (afPE) and prior to that he was the CPD Manager for the Physical Education Association for the United Kingdom (PEA UK). Between 2003-07 Andy worked on a number of national projects principally within the Government’s PESSCL strategy, including specific responsibilities on the Get Physical series for Teachers TV; the QCA Core Tasks DVD; and the national PESS professional development programme. During that period he was also a member of the management group for the Training and Development Agency Initial Teacher Education Project for physical education.

Previously, Andy worked for five years at St Mary’s College, Twickenham (1998 – 2003) where he had responsibility for the primary initial teacher education physical education programme. During that time he was an elected member of the Executive Committee for PEA UK. Andy has presented at numerous physical education conferences and has regularly written articles, which have been published in professional journals. He edited the inaugural Members Yearbook for afPE. Andy continues to contribute to national debates and consultations and is unstinting in his efforts to raise the profile of physical education at all levels.

Andy returned to Chichester having first served here in the Army as a physical training instructor, and then as a student teacher at Bishop Otter College. Subsequently he taught (secondary) physical education in Hampshire and Surrey for 13 years during which time he was a Head of Department and a Head of Year.

Interests

Andy is a respected and knowledgeable advocate for physical education - From 2007-09 he was the South East Government Office Region (GoR) Lead Adviser for the phase one and phase two implementation of the new secondary curriculum and in 2009 he was asked to act as expert adviser on the BBC Raise your Game series for the BBC Learning Zone. Andy is the present SE GoR Secretary for afPE. He has been awarded two prestigious national awards for his contribution to physical education: Fellow of PEAUK (2006); and Honoured Member of afPE (2009).
