The National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENC) is a statutory requirement for all SENCOs new to their role. The training programme will enable SENCOs to develop their professional knowledge, understanding and skills in their leadership of SEN provision at their school.
The training is being delivered at Masters level on a part-time basis over one academic year. There are 10 facilitated sessions which will be delivered in your local authority area by university lecturers, local authority personnel with a responsibility for SEN, experienced practitioners and specialists from supporting agencies.
The major part of the programme will be work-based where you will be involved in evaluating, researching and developing good practice in the leadership and management of provision of pupils within your SENCO role.
Successful completion of the programme will give SENCOs a Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Practice and 60 credits towards a Masters level degree.
Currently this programme is funded* by the Training and Development Agency (TDA) for SENCOs appointed within the past year (see criteria for funding as detailed below*). Experienced SENCOs and SENCOs working in non-mainstream schools are also welcome to apply but will not be eligible for TDA funding. They should contact the Programme Co-ordinator to discuss their application and how the programme can be tailored to meet their individual needs.
* TDA Criteria for funding: Teachers with QTS, new to the role of SENCo (in post less than 12 months total at their present and previous schools), working in an eligible mainstream school, not from a school that has a SENCo who is currently undertaking the NASENC, school to support staff member to complete required elements of the professional development and to release them from school to attend any taught sessions.
