Natural Science

Natural Science encompasses the range of sciences involved in the study of the world around us and its phenomena. A focus on understanding the world is the foremost justification for the inclusion of science in the curriculum. At one extreme we want and need to understand the natural processes underlying the universe and life. At the other, we need to use this understanding to influence the ways in which humans interact with the natural world.

Natural Science subject study provides a broad, relevant foundation in areas of National Curriculum Science. By the end of the six modules, you should have science knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes to deal sensibly with the natural world in its broadest sense. This broad view is implemented with content that ranges from life sciences through materials and physical science, while connecting with issues of real life, and with primary teaching.

Another theme that runs through the subject study is the development of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes for investigation (‘hands-on’ research). At your own level, this will help you balance the contents of science with the processes of science. This will also provide you with crucial background when, as teachers, you are helping to put Sc1 of the National Curriculum into practice.

Other Details

This course prepares you to teach in Key Stage 1 and 2 (ages 5- 11). Students will be able to specialise in one key stage through their final school placement.
