Key Skills

Student Support Services
Student Support Services aims to enhance your experience and sense of wellbeing at university by advising, counselling, guiding and offering professional support in key areas; you may find a number of services are important to you or that you only require one or two.
The services are confidential and designed to meet the needs of all students across subject areas, modes of study, background, age and other differences. We promote equality of opportunity and provide the platform to enable you to reach your full potential both as students and as graduates.

Learning Resources
The provision of learning resources and a fully supported learning environment is the responsibility of the Information Services department. At each campus students will have access to a range of resources, facilities and services, comprising Library, Computing, Media Services and Reprographics. Support and training is available from Information Services staff.
Bishop Otter Campus
Learning Resources Centre (LRC)
The LRC at Bishop Otter Campus is an integrated area providing access to the Library, computer suites, media services and the Otter Gallery.
During semesters the LRC is open from 8.45 am until 9.45 pm from Monday to Thursday and until 7.00 pm on Friday (though the Library service closes at 5.00 pm). Weekend opening is from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm on Saturday and from 10.00 am to 10.00 pm on Sunday (though the Library service closes at 5.00 pm).
Bognor Regis Campus
Learning resources at the Bognor Regis Campus are split between adjacent buildings – the Library and the Information Technology (IT) Centre.
During semesters the Library is open from 8.45 am to 7.00 pm on Mondays and Thursdays, to 9.15 pm on Tuesdays, to 9.00 pm on Wednesdays and to 5.00 pm on Fridays. Weekend opening is from 12.00 to 4.00 on Saturdays and Sundays.
The computer suites in the IT Centre are available from 8.45 am to 10.00 pm during the week, from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm on Saturdays and from 10.00 am to 10.00 pm on Sundays.
Code of Conduct
Students are asked to observe the general regulations for the use of these centres. Neither food nor hot drinks should be consumed and all mobile phones must be switched off. Persistent offenders will be penalised. All students must agree to abide by the computer code of conduct when they log on to the network for the first time.
Library Services
All Library staff are there to provide students with help and support in the use of the Library systems. A team of Subject Librarians will provide specialist advice and training.
Loan Periods
- Standard Loan 4 weeks (no label)

Recalls
Books will be recalled if there is a reservation. A fine of 50p per day is imposed if items are not returned by the recall date.
Security
A security system operates on each campus. If the alarm is activated by anyone with an authorised item, the person will be cautioned. Any subsequent incident will lead to a 10-week ban from borrowing and the Programme Co-ordinator will be notified.
Electronic Library Resources
More and more library information is available electronically on the Portia system(see below). The Library service has made available 28 different databases for you to consult on-line, covering a variety of subjects and providing an index to the contents of a wide range of journals. Some databases give you the full text online. These can all be accessed off-campus through the ATHENS authentication scheme.
Subject Librarians
The Library Service has a team of librarians who provide specific support for all subject areas. They can be contacted by phone, e-mail or in person at the appropriate campus library.
LEO
Library Enquiries Online is a new e-mail based enquiry service. Questions can be sent to the Library to be answered by the Subject Librarian team.
Media Centre
This is physically situated in G7 in the LRC and is supported by a team of specialist technicians. It contains 30 Apple Macintosh computers with a range of multi-media creative software including Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Quark Express and Sibelius.
There are 7 video edit suites.
Equipment Loans
Students can borrow a range of media equipment (video cameras, sound recording equipment, lighting kits) from the Equipment Loans counter in the LRC for course-related media work. The equipment loans counter is open from 10.30 to 1.00 and from 3.30 to 4.30 on weekdays.
Photocopiers
Photocopiers are provided in the LRC and in the Bognor Library and are card-operated. A colour copier/printer is available in G11 in the LRC.
Reprographics Centre
The Reprographics Centre at Bognor offers binding, laminating and copying services for students as a paid service. It also has a self-service student work area. There is a satellite office at Bishop Otter Campus in H145.
Computer Facilities
At Bognor Regis
In the LRC, rooms G11, S3, S6 and S9 are PC-based computer rooms, supported at all times by Information Services staff. S9 may be booked for teaching. G7 is equipped with Apple Macintosh computers. Specialist facilities for students with disabilities are provided in G11.
At Bishop Otter
The IT Centre has an open access room and several IT teaching rooms, most of which can be used for open access when not used for teaching.
The open access facility is supported by students employed by the IS Department.
Printing
Network printing is available at both campuses. Student printing accounts can be credited at the Library counters. A colour copier/printer is provided in G11 in the LRC and a colour printer in the Media Centre.
Software
All networked PCs provide access to the Microsoft Office suite and Internet Explorer. Specialist software such as SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) is also available.
Portia
This is the University's integrated, Web-based, computer environment which includes course information, University's information generally, e-mail, calendar, the Library catalogue and the electronic library resources. The centrepiece of Portia is the My Courses page. Here you will find a list of the courses and modules you are currently following. For each of these you will have a Course Homepage on which there are (depending on your Tutor's policy) links to course documentation and relevant information resources, and to a course-based Message Board and Chat Room.
