Post Office could be the next Woolworths according to new research
The most comprehensive report to be carried out in the UK on the impact of Post Office closures has been published today by the University of Chichester and West Sussex County Council. This 14-month study was conducted with over 400 residents and 200 businesses in West Sussex and is the first report of its kind to look at the impact on both urban communities and rural areas.
Banging the drum for health, well-being and fitness
During June this year the Clem Burke Drumming Project (a scientific collaboration between Clem Burke, the drummer from rock band Blondie, and the University of Chichester and University of Gloucestershire) was featured at both the Cheltenham Science Festival (3-7 June) and the London International Music Show (11-14 June) where scientists from the Universities of Chichester and Gloucestershire shared their recent research findings related to modern day rock drumming.
International dance scholar presents one-day research conference at University of Chichester
Renowned international dance academic Professor Ann Cooper-Albright from the US is to present a one-day conference at the University of Chichester as part of the Dance department’s programme of research events.
Entitled ‘Acts of passion: history, language and the body’ the conference will take place on Tuesday 30 June and will consist of a performative lecture and experiential workshop.
Research Forum on the impact of Freud’s famous essay ‘The Uncanny’
The English and Creative Writing Department at the University of Chichester held a literary research forum in February to discuss and explore the ongoing impact of Freud’s famous essay ‘The Uncanny’, written in 1919.

Leading international dance academic, Susan Manning, will reflect on her recent experience curating an exhibit in Paris on the repertory of 20th century African-American theatre dance. Like Barack Obama, choreographers who came of age in the 1980s and 1990s – Jawole Zollar, Bill T. Jones, Ralph Lemon, and others – have brought a post-Civil Rights sensibility to their aesthetics and politics. Research at the University of Chichester achieves International Standards
The majority of entries submitted by the University of Chichester were rated as being ‘internationally recognised or internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour’.
The RAE 2008 has analysed hundreds of research entries from 159 higher educational institutions across the UK. Only a handful recorded an important improvement by moving up the league table by more than 30 places, and the University of Chichester is one of these much lauded 'rising stars'.

It follows the announcement by Post Office Ltd that four Horsham branches proposed for closure, which the company agreed to re-look at, will now be closed after all.

Chichester Social Science Professor to present findings on local immigration
Professor Chris Gaine of the University of Chichester is to present two public lectures, in Bognor Regis and Chichester, looking at the impact of new immigration in West Sussex.
The lectures have been organised as part of the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) Festival of Social Science which runs from 7th to 16th March 2008. The aim of the Festival is to celebrate some of the country’s leading social science research and demonstrate how this work makes a difference to all our lives.
Dr Julia Potter wins new grant for cardiovascular research
Senior PE lecturer at the University of Chichester, Dr Julia Potter, has just been awarded a grant of one million yen (about £5,000) by the TANITA Healthy Weight Community Trust for some research work which she is doing with the aortic aneurysm clinic at St Richards Hospital in Chichester, looking for a relationship between body composition and cardiovascular disease.
