The Probationer MPhil Scheme

Chichester currently runs a probationer MPhil scheme whereby applicants may register for six tutorials at low cost, in order to carry out feasibility studies of various kinds including some testing of interest, materials, methods and resolve. Candidates have found this scheme of great benefit when submitting formal research proposals and applying for funding, whether at Chichester or elsewhere.
Entry requirements
The normal requirement for the Probationer MPhil programme is a good honours degree (first or upper second class) or a relevant Masters degree. For a PhD the normal entry requirement is an MPhil. Candidates with other qualifications are considered individually on their merits.
Students who wish to complete the Probationer MPhil Scheme and go on to apply for an MPhil/PHD may be able to do so but only after careful scrutiny of any such proposal within the relevant school and our Research Degrees Committee and the University of Southampton's Research Degrees Committee. The school will take account of the field in which the student wishes to work, the availability of resources, the nature of current research strengths and the particular needs of the student may have regarding specialist facilities.
It is fully accepted that we cannot cater for every enquiry and some applicants and students will be referred to other universities, either after initial contact or after the preliminary probationer phase.
Duration
The maximum time taken to complete this part-time Probationer MPhil programme is two years or 24 months though some students, with the agreement of their supervisor, may take considerably less time, for example six months.
