Does the degree qualify me to teach?

No, but it would give alternative degree route which would give you an excellent preparation to apply for QTS, either PGCE or GTP, in Secondary or Primary.

Do I need coaching and teaching experience to qualify?

A proven interest in coaching and teaching would help your application. This could be through work experience, working/coaching at a school/club or a level 1 coaching award, or equivalent.

What does it qualify me to do?

Just as any other subject, it provides you with a degree qualification and the currency on the employment market that goes with that.

Will I definitely be able to follow a QTS at the end?

There are never any guarantees, but it would give you every chance of successful application and if your interest in teaching grows during the course you will have the chance to tailor aspects of your year 3 programme, such as the dissertation, to focus specifically on aspects of teaching that interest you to further support your application.

Do I need to be good at Science?

Always helpful, as much of the underpinning theory relates to sport science principles and their application to practical contexts. But, a willingness to work at the theory is just as important!

What types of assessment are there on the course – will my sporting expertise be assessed?

There will be a variety of assessment methods used throughout the course, including examinations, assignments, practical assessments and presentations.

Will I definitely have to complete a placement and will I be assessed on this placement?

Yes, you will have to participate in work placements, which will form a natural part of the application of theory and research to professional practice and thus be integrated into the assessment procedure in both direct and indirect methods. A certain amount of flexibility will be built into the system to cater for individual expertise/interest as far as possible.

Will I be interviewed?

Whether you are called for interview will depend on your application. If you are being interviewed for another course here, you will only be interviewed the once and your suitability for this course will be assessed then. If not, you may be called for interview though this depends on each candidate’s portfolio of experience.

How much practical?

You will follow a programme of practical activities to develop your performance in a range of activities, but you will also experience some through micro-teaching and micro-coaching sessions within the modules.

Why do this and not other degrees?

An increasing number of students over the last few years have struggled to decide between different sport/physical activity related degree courses. Many are just not ready to make that decision to specialise in one subject area at this moment in time. This degree offers the chance to study both subject areas to degree level and thus allow both doors to be kept open longer so whatever choice is made in the end is an informed one.

Will I get a chance to do governing body awards as I go?

You will be encouraged to access Governing body coaching awards through your specific sports as you go, which normally happens outside of the course. There will be a number of opportunities for students to access other courses relevant to the support of the coaching and teaching process for example SportscoachUK workshops. There will be some additional charges if you wish to take up this opportunity, but it is optional.

Will it cost me?

There will be a need to purchase some kit when you arrive. The other options as mentioned above

Can I get Accreditation for Prior Learning?

In theory, yes, but this would be decided on an individual basis.
