Student Sarah Fogwill has been chosen for the England Women’s team for the 2011 Indoor Cricket World Cup. Sarah, who is studying to be a PE and Sports Coaching teacher, only started playing indoor cricket last year after being asked to play in a league game by a friend because they were short of players. read more >>

Sports Federation Review of the Year 2009/10

2009/10 has been a hugely successful year with new Clubs Lacrosse, UCSA (Surfing) & UCPA (Paddling) adding to the strong base of activities & Clubs within the Sports Federation. The numerous Clubs & Teams continue to provide countless volunteering opportunities ranging from Club Official roles & coaching to specific Work Placements. The Sports Team Therapist Scheme again provided over 30 level 2 & 3 students from Sports Therapy degree programme working with over 15 teams providing first aid & gaining invaluable experience.

The Sports Federation Executive Committee set in place a number of initiatives throughout the year and organised a number of fundraising activities. Overall a £1000 was raised for the UCSU nominated charity Dreams Come True. 

This year saw a record 25 teams enter BUCS (British University College Sport) with 5 winning their respective leagues and gaining promotion,  Well done to Women’s Tennis, Men’s Basketball, Men’s Football 2nds & 5th’s and finally Women’s Football who gained promotion joining Women’s Rugby in the Elite Premiership South, a remarkable achievement.  Overall UoC finished 66th out of 150 Institutions. 

In their debut season the Men’s Basketball team 'University of Chichester Thunder' in partnership with British Basketball Club Worthing Thunder, narrowly missed out on promotion by a single win in National Division 4 South West after 13 league wins out of 16. 

The Gifted & Talented Sports Scholarship Programme was created this year and saw 10 outstanding athletes supported in their respective Sports. Of these athletes Will Golder competed for GB in the Bobsleigh over the winter and 4 students competed for the prestigious England Universities Squads of Basketball (Bud Johnston), Hockey (Siobhan Aherne & Heather Batten) in the Home Nations Competition in April. Mel Curson competed for the England University Netball Squad, and was subsequently appointed vice captain of the British Universities Netball Squad. Sarah Kempson who plays for Chelsea FC was selected and made her debut for the England under 23 Football Team in February. 

Snow Sports organised a winter trip to France that saw over 50 students attend, elsewhere 19 out of 20 competitors from Tough Guy completed the extreme endurance assault course in February finishing 15th out of 52 teams! The Ultimate Frisbee Club held again the South East National Qualifiers here at BOC that saw 24 teams in action.  The Women’s Team finished 2nd overall in the National Indoors to their immense credit.  The annual Sports Tour saw 90 plus students head to Salou in Easter, and were awarded the Best University on Tour!

April saw the annual Sports Awards held at Fontwell Racecourse presented by former Arsenal & England Footballer Lee Dixon. Over 200 students and guests were in attendance for an array of awards and presentations. Read more about the Sports Federation Sports Awards at Fontwell

In May the annual Alumni Sports Day took place at the BOC with over 100 returning graduated students competing against the current student teams in 8 fixtures; the day finished as a 4-4 draw.  The evening saw current and graduated students regaling former and current successes and memories of there sporting days whilst they were here at Chichester.

Students rewarded for a year to remember

More than 400 students packed out the University of Chichester's ZeeBar for the annual Sports Federation Sports Awards. Hosted by Federation president Marrisa Joseph, it kicked off with a video of the sporting year produced by Helen Coyte.

Presentations were made to the ladies' basketball team for their SUSC Cup win, led by captain Chloe McEwan and featuring two English University representatives.

The men's rugby club were up next as Martyn Smith picked up the most improved player award. The club's second team picked up awards for the most improved team and club of the year. A key member of the club, Spencer Humphreys, won the special recognition award for his efforts as team physio.

This year saw a tough guy club formed. Seven guys from the University took part in one of the toughest sports events the body can take. Events included hill hell, extreme cold, load lugging and water torture. Those who took part and completed this competition were recognised for their efforts - Rob Fordham, Francis Melmoe, Joel Lane, Asa Leathem, Graham Jackson, Harry Mann and James Ruggles.

The University also has an impressive record in elite individual competitions. Students to represent the University with distinction include Lloyd Ellet, who won the BUSA 69kg welterweight gold, and represented the English Universities team in the boxing home nations competition in Sheffield.

Ten students went to trials for representative university squads and to their immense credit six made it to the final squads.

Rob Attwood got to the English University volleyball trials but just missed final selection. Gemma Lowe, incoming netball club president, was voted sports personality, and the finale of the evening saw the men's football first team named team of the year, having won their league and reached the semi-finals of the BUSA Shield. The University praised sports shop Game, Set & Match for its support for student sport.

British Games success for University of Chichester students

The recent British University Games came to an end with England winning the overall competition, after four days of intense competition across five sports.

Six University of Chichester students represented England across four different sports and they all played a considerable part in England’s overall win.

BA (Hons) Physical Education and Teaching student Kim Whitcombe, played in the final match that saw England draw 2-2 with Northern Ireland and win on penalties to claim the Football title.

BA (Hons) Physical Education and Teaching student Siobhan Aherne and Year 1 B.Sc Sports Science student Vicky Kimber, played in all 3 Hockey matches, both scoring in their opening 4-2 win over Wales. Defeat to Scotland 3-0 saw the England Hockey team finish runners up.

BA (Hons) Physical Education and Teaching student Anna Howson, played in the England Netball team managed by Physical Education and Teaching lecturer Jane Lomax. After a narrow defeat 44-42 to Northern Ireland and a 45 all draw with Wales, England rallied to defeat Scotland 68-31 and finished runners up.

BA (Hons) Physical Education and Teaching student Holly Over & GTP Student Katharina Wohlberg, played in all 3 games for the England Basketball team. Defeating Northern Ireland 97-46, Wales 111-37 and finally Scotland to claim the Basketball title. Katharina was awarded the Basketball Competitions Most Valuable Player for her outstanding efforts!
