MA Ed Modules within Physical Education
The department of physical education has recently introduced two new modules that form part of the university’s MA Ed programme. The first module – The child as the centre of the physical education experience – a contextualised perspective takes as its core focus the ways in which the child's experience physical education. The course aims to evaluate how adults within the profession might progress towards understanding the nature of children’s experience of the subject and develop professional practice accordingly. This module is particularly suited to teachers of physical education but also of interest to any individuals involved in the subject area and has been successfully completed by non-specialists.
The second module, Active Schools – creating a reality focuses on issues associated with children’s activity levels, clearly the focus of much popular debate within education and in particular, physical education. The module facilitates participants’ progression towards achieving a reflective and analytical perspective regarding the establishment and management of active schools. Students are encouraged to critically evaluate links between Government policy, schools, family and the child. The module contributes to the positive vision for children and young people that is embodied in the outcomes of Every Child Matters. The module is therefore suited to any teachers involved in the establishment of healthy living patterns for children within their schools.
It is envisaged that the number of modules on offer from this department will increase in the near future so that subject specialists might retain a focus on physical education throughout their study at Masters level.
