Born and raised in London, Stephen's passion for music began during his school years, singing and recording with the internationally acclaimed Wandsworth School Boys Choir and playing clarinet and bass clarinet in the London Schools' Symphony Orchestra.

Stephen's music education continued at Southampton University where he gained BA (Hons.) and MMus degrees in music. He was a visiting research student in the Departments of Music and Philosophy at the Université de Rouen in France and was awarded a PhD in 2002 from Dartington College of Arts for a thesis entitled: From le cri de la nature to Pygmalion: a study of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's philosophy of music and aesthetic and reform of opera.

Before joining the University of Chichester in 2003, Stephen was Head of Opera Studies at Rose Bruford College in Kent and worked with many of the leading opera companies and opera practitioners in the UK.

Stephen's research takes two distinct paths: composition for Film, TV, Games and the Concert Hall; and eighteenth century studies – especially opera and philosophies of music. He is Composer and Audio Director for Slightly Mad Studios, an International games development studio and has composed music scores and designed sound for a string of award winning computer games. He most recently completed the unique hybrid score and audio direction for Electronic Arts' AAA game: Shift 2 Unleashed, and scored an international award-winning documentary film.


With Brett-Dempsey Music, Stephen has composed the music for over thirty cinema, television and radio advertisements, including notable international campaigns for Budweiser, McDonalds and Pizza Hut. Stephen is a member of Northpole Music, the leading film music production collective directed by Grammy award winning film music producer Steve McLaughlin and Ivor Novello nominated Film Composer Ilan Eshkeri www.northpolemusic.co.uk


In 2009/10 Stephen was nominated for two Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards (Los Angeles) and a Game Audio Network Guild Award (San Francisco) for his groundbreaking work on Electronic Arts' Need for Speed: Shift video game.
