Guardian LogoThe famous Isle of Wight rock festival is helping to train students for a career in the music industry. It has developed a unique relationship with Platform One an independent, not-for-profit youth arts organisation, delivering arts initiatives and training opportunities for young people on the Isle of Wight. Platform One has been involved in delivering programmes in collaboration with the University of Chichester Music department since 2003.

A new venture brings full-time higher education to the island for the first time. From September, In collaboration with the University of Chichester, it will offer a BA in Commercial Music. Read Guardian article.


Cello Weekend5th Annual Cello Weekend, May 24-25

The 5th Annual Cello Weekend is a gathering for cellists of all ages and abilities to come together in a cello orchestra.

The event has dedicated rehearsals for advanced players and young beginners. The parts within the music are specially arranged for the participants, so if there are adult beginners, they need not rehearse with the children, but can play simplified parts with the advanced players.

Speed-Date your Music Career

Continuing the University of Chichester’s commitment to graduate employment, the Music Department held its first Speed-Date your Music Career event on Friday 8th February 2008. For 3 hours, experts from a variety of fields in the music sector talked with music students about getting into some of the diverse music careers including performing, teaching and community music and also how to protect their work.

The music department were pleased to welcome Alex Mann (MU), John Mahy (West Sussex Music Service), Jon Webster (Music Managers Forum), Debra Richards (Creative Choices), Keith Frowde (MCPS), Jinx Prowse (Music Fusion). The high turn out of students demonstrated the commitment of our students to not only succeed in their studies but as professionals as well.

Speed-Date your Music Career

Our guests commented on the enthusiasm demonstrated by our students and their articulation of intelligent questions. Organised by Senior Lecturer in Music Louise Jackson, the event is set to become an annual fixture in the department’s calendar creating and improving our links with employers and industries within the sector and encouraging our students to progress onto a creative career route.


Senior lecturer secures £30,000 music grant

Senior Lecturer in Music, Laura Ritchie, has secured funding of £30,000 from the Paul Morgan Charitable Foundation to invite the internationally renowned Chilingirian String Quartet to be quartet in residence at the University for the next three years.

The quartet will give masterclasses for music students, education workshops for the local community and recitals at the University as part of the agreement.

This development will add to the excellence of our students’ experience and it will also make a valuable contribution to the musical life of the City of Chichester.

University lecturer scores second prestigious award for his concert music

For the second year in succession, Jonathan Little’s compositions have been honoured with an ASCAPlus award for concert music. This year’s award was announced in New York by Marilyn Bergman, President of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. ASCAPlus awards are granted by an independent panel and “based upon the unique prestige value” of a writer’s catalogue of original compositions.

Stephen Baysted’s BMW M3 Challenge

During the summer vacation, University of Chichester senior lecturer in Music, Dr Stephen Baysted was invited to the BMW Acoustical Research Laboratory near Munich in Germany to record the engine sounds of the latest iteration of BMW’s high-performance car the ‘M3’.
