International Short Programme Unit – National and International Recognition

The International Short Programme Unit (ISPU) is deemed to be one of the top seven International CPD Centres in Britain in the eyes of the British Council, China. In October, the ISPU successfully submitted a bid to the British Council, China to train Chinese teachers and become part of a group of automatically preferred UK institutions to receive groups of teachers from across the whole of China as part of a British Government – Chinese Government Project. The initial period of this project is three years but it is expected that this will be extended.

As part of the project, the seven successful British institutions formed a British Delegation and took part in a twelve day familiarisation visit in March 2010 across six cities in China organised by the British Council, China. During the visit, the Delegation met key Chinese Government partners, key universities, teacher researchers, observed classroom practice and took part in one conference and two seminars in order to increase their understanding of a diverse variety of educational contexts which included those in Chongqing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Hefei, Beijing and Guangzhou. The British Delegation subsequently showcased their findings to an international audience in a presentation given at the IATEFL Conference in Harrogate in April.

As automatic partners to receive groups of Chinese teachers on training programmes, the three year project has now commenced and groups of Chinese teachers will soon be arriving to study on our Bognor Regis campus.

Coincidentally, the ISPU was featured in the English Language Gazette in April 2010, as a centre of excellence based on the British Council Inspector's publishable statement. The University of Chichester is one of only eight institutions in the country to have gained six scores of excellent out of a possible eight under the British Council’s Accreditation Scheme, AccreditationUK. Only two other British universities scored more highly than the University of Chichester.
