Entry Requirements

We consider all applicants on the basis of their academic achievement and potential, relevant experience, English language proficiency and suitability for the course. In addition to the general entrance requirements listed below, there are usually individual subject requirements for each particular course.

Undergraduate study (BA / BSc / EFdA / FdSc)

Entry requirements vary from course to course but international applicants for most courses require the equivalent of a minimum of two A-level passes with relevant grades.

You may need to complete an international foundation course before entering an undergraduate degree if you have not completed 13 years of primary and secondary education.

Postgraduate study (MA / MSc / PGDip)

International applicants for postgraduate degrees should hold the equivalent of a good honours degree from a British university or an institution of similar standing. Please contact the Admissions Office (admissions@chi.ac.uk) to find out if your degree qualification is equivalent /suitable.

English language requirements

All non-native speakers of English are required to provide evidence of their ability in the English language in order to study for a university qualification in the UK. The standard entry requirements are listed below. We advise you to check these requirements now as you may be required to sit one of the examinations listed before you can receive an unconditional offer of a place.

Undergraduate:

  • Ascentis Anglia Proficiency level - normally Merit (Pass may be considered for degrees including International English Studies)
  • IELTS: 6.0 overall with 6.0 writing and no component less than 5.5 (IELTS 5.5 for degrees including International English Studies)
    OR
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): a score of at least 50 (42 for degrees including International English Studies)
  • TOEFL: IBT: 87 (minimum component scores: Listening - 21; Reading - 22; Speaking - 23; Writing - 21)
  • Cambridge Proficiency / Advanced: A - C

Postgraduate:

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall with 6.0 writing (with no component less than 5.5)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): a score of at least 60
  • TOEFL: IBT: 95 (with no less than 23 in any component)
  • Cambridge Proficiency A - C / Advanced: A - B
  • A bachelor degree taught in a majority English speaking country
