Deputy Deans

Reporting to the Executive Dean, the Deputy Deans play a key role in leading the academic enhancement agenda within the University. The Deputy Deans have delegated responsibility for the design and delivery of the academic portfolio including collaborative provision, oversight of quality and standards, student experience and the promotion of excellence and innovation in learning and teaching.

Deputy Dean: Gill Butler
Gill Butler

Biographical Information

Prior to working at the University of Chichester, Gill worked as a Probation Officer and Children’s Social Worker.  She has held a number of posts within the University, including Head of Social Work, and Deputy Head of the School of Social Studies.  Gill has extensive management experience in higher education which includes quality assurance, developing external relations, collaborative provision, and course development.

Gill Butler has line-management responsibility for Childhood Studies, Education, Psychology and Counselling, Social Work and Social Care, Adventure Education, Physical Education, Sport Development and Management, and Sports Sciences.

Areas of Responsibility

Academic Leadership

Provides leadership to academic departments and supports the design and development of new provision in accordance with the University Strategic Plan.

Academic Management

Supports the Executive Dean in the governance, planning, communication and management of the academic community through the Heads of Departments’ Forum and as part of the Senior Management Team.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Gill Butler is the University’s Learning and Teaching Champion.  As chair of the Learning and Teaching Development and Practice Group, and a member of the Learning and Teaching Committee, Gill Butler oversees the promotion of high quality teaching, learning and assessment, ensuring that innovative practice is recognised, supported and disseminated among internal and external academic audiences.

Quality and Standards

As a member of the University’s Academic Standards Committee, Gill Butler has oversight of the quality of courses and the student experience and key quality processes including course approval, periodic review and annual academic monitoring.

Deputy Dean: Mark Mason
Mark Mason

Biographical Information

Prior to his appointment, Mark was Head of School Partnership and Deputy Head of the School of Teacher Education.  Mark has extensive management experience in higher education including quality assurance and standards, collaborative provision, and development of the academic portfolio.

Mark Mason has line-management responsibility for English, Applied Language Studies, Dance, Fine Art, History, Performing Arts, Media Studies/Media Production, Music, the School of Enterprise Management and Leadership (SEMAL), and Theology.
