Local History Talks

History in Chichester: A listings site for public talks and guest lectures about historians and the past.
Welcome to the University of Chichester’s History Department. The Department is consistently ranked among the best in the UK for student satisfaction and is a ‘top fifteen’ 2011-12 Sunday Times University Guide organization. Composed of 12 historians and 195 undergraduates it is thriving.
To help students, staff and the wider community find out more about public history lectures in the Chichester area we are delighted to publish the following listings pages of forthcoming events. It is a remarkable document listing a fascinating range of speakers and subjects. As anyone can see Chichester is truly a wonderful place to be interested in the past! Of special note are our two regional partners that involve historians from the Department. Dr Andrew Chandler (Reader in History) runs the George Bell Institute in association with the Cathedral and as you will see below he is hosting three international speakers there this Autumn. Dr. Danae Tankard (Senior Lecturer in History) is co-employed by the University and the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum. Annually it hosts the ‘Tales from the Downs’ guest lecture series.
Our own department also regularly hosts guest academics to present their research findings, often they are from one of our international partners the University of Eastern Finland and KLU Lueven. This autumn we welcome two guest speakers to campus:
5 October 2011, Alwyn Turner on ‘The 1970s: A revolutionary decade’, Cloisters, Bishop Otter Campus, 18.00.
22 November, 2011, Professor Alun Munslow, ‘Historians on history’, LO6, Bishop Otter Campus, 1800.
I hope you enjoy reading the listings below. All information was correct at the time we consulted it. However do telephone organizations to make sure there are no last minute changes or errors on our part. Also keep an eye for updates which we will add as and when new events are listed. If we have overlooked something relevant you would like to promote here please do contact us.
Dr. Hugo Frey, Head of History, University of Chichester.
