ENTRY FROM A-LEVELS vs. FOUNDATION OR NATIONAL DIPLOMA: Foundation and N.Diploma courses are diagnostic and help students decide which area of Art & Design they want to pursue at degree level. However if A2 level students are clear in wanting to study FINE ART we will see this as a positive choice and are more than happy to interview at this point. We interview most students applying from A-Level and Foundation/National Diploma, for Single Honours and Major routes, and offers are made on the basis of the quality and strength of work in their portfolio and their interview.

The Fine Art Programme at the University of Chichester is focused on individual progress and achievement with the freedom to explore studio and workshop practice across a broad range of skills and techniques.

Student Comments

Selected responses from the National Student Survey 2010 undertaken anonymously by final year students studying on the Fine Art degree course.

Fantastic access to teaching staff that have always been positive and helpful. Prepared to offer constructive criticism, and generally been supportive. Read more comments >>

Comments from current students:

Vincent Smith (2nd year, student rep): The last two years studying Fine Art at University of Chichester have without a doubt, been one the most challenging and enjoyable experiences of my life. There are many strengths to the Fine Art programme; the studio opening hours; the Student Subject Board addressing student concerns; the helpfulness of the technicians; the quality of the visiting lecture programme; and the quality and content of the contextual studies strand of our studies. However, the quality and ease of access to the tutors is certainly one of the best aspects of the programme. This aspect should be shouted from the highest roof tops in any promotional material used to promote the Fine Art programme to prospective students wishing to receive a high quality education.

The Fine Art Programme - BA and MA Fine Art

Multi-disciplinary or specialist routes in:

  • painting
  • sculpture (including ceramic, metal, wood, casting etc)
  • textiles (includes weaving, feltmaking, embroidery etc)
  • print (includes silkscreen, etching, relief print)
  • digital media (photography, video, sound, net.art, flash animation, installation & projection)

At the University of Chichester we recognise that many art students want to keep their options open, hoping to develop skills in a range of disciplines before becoming more specialised, while others may want to choose one single discipline.

Our BA and MA programmes are built around a principle of flexibility and choice, and allow students to either:

  • specialise from the outset (i.e. textiles, sculpture, printmaking, painting or digital photography/video)
  • or to move between various disciplines over their period of study as they develop their own ‘hybrid’ practice (i.e. textiles and metal sculpture, painting and digital photography, printmaking and ceramic sculpture etc)
  • or settle into one specialism at a later date.

Part Time Structure

All routes can be taken part-time. Generally this is done by taking 2 years to complete each level. It is possible to switch from part-time to full time at key points. For more information visit a sample timetable for part-time study.
