Steve McDadeSpecialism: Painting and Drawing; Photography; Video and Sound Installation Art History and Critical Theory.

Steve has worked in a number of UK HEI’s and Art colleges including Exeter, Falmouth, Cardiff, Newport, Hereford and Southampton. He teaches across the broad spectrum of undergraduate and postgraduate fine art at the University of Chichester. He has a particular interest in critical theory and its relation to studio based practice. He has re-designed the curriculum for critical and contextual strand for Fine Art putting greater emphasis on the relationship between critical theory and studio practice formulating the principle of ‘practice as research’ into the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

A former director of TAG, (The Artists Group, Southampton) was responsible for The Northam Road Gallery (NRG).

He works across a range of media including photography and installation work but principally painting. Exhibitions (Southampton City Gallery,) have used imagery taken from domestic and public buildings exploring ideas of control/security. Other work has used live music, installation with video projections on the theme of 'displacement' (Millais Gallery, Southampton). The recent 2006 exhibition at The Otter Gallery ‘Moving House’ explored the notion of interior space as a metaphor for psychological states and involved video, painting and sculptural installation. ‘Drawing on Research’ (2008) exhibition represented a range of drawing practices as part of ‘Practice as Research’ exhibition in The Otter Gallery. A recent exhibition at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery ‘Interventions’ (2008) responding to the collection within the museum. His work is in public and private collections.

Alongside visual artwork he performs as a drummer in improvisational and experimental sound and music collaborations with a number of jazz groups including UK tours with 'On The Corner' with the late Dick Heckstall-Smith, Ed Jones, Rick Foot etc, playing the music of Charles Mingus.
