Dissertation (single honours, major, joint, but NOT minor)
or
Essay/Vocational & Professional Practice (single honours, major, but NOT joint or minor)
At the end of Level 2, Single honours and Major students will make a choice between two distinct level 3 pathways, the 30 credit Dissertation or the 15 credit Essay / Vocational followed by the 15 credit Professional Development . The Dissertation option is most suited for students who may wish to progress to post-graduate study, while the Essay/Vocational and Professional Development modules provide the opportunity to develop practical career skills. Both Options are designed to engage students in sustained critical debate, analysis and reflection.
Dissertation, 30 credits over both semesters.
This takes the form of a 7000 word submission for students whose main strengths and interests lie in researching, discussing and evaluating concepts and ideas of artists, art movements and cultural and historical contexts. Students will be encouraged to look at areas which will broaden, compliment and give greater depth of understanding to their own particular area of practice developed in the Exhibition module. Students are supported through a series of study skill presentations, group seminars and individual tutorials. The final dissertation will demonstrate an engaged inquiry, a rounded argument and conclusion, which reflects wide reading of relevant publications as well as insight and knowledge of their subject. (To see an example, see Fine Art Dissertations.
Essay, 15 credits in semester 1
This takes the form of a 3500 word essay investigating a topic that relates to their studio work, and building upon written work in level 2.
OR
Vocational, 15 credits in semester 1
This takes the form of an real vocational placement within an arts related context where students observe and support the professional practice or employment role. This is presented in the form of a 3500 word report and relevant visual documentation.
AND
Professional Practice, 15 credits in semester 2
In this module students undertaking the Exhibition modules produce the professional supporting material that one would expect in professional gallery exhibitions - ie photo archive of previous work, a pack containing a CV and business card, and supporting critical statement that articulates the issues and concerns inherent in the student's research, as evidenced in the exhibition.
Teaching is varied:
- 1-1 tutorials, booked in advance with your tutor.
- Regular meetings in your tutor group and your personal tutor.
Assessment is of written work marked by two members of staff and moderated by the whole module tutor team.
