MA Fine Art

The focus of the Fine Art MA route will be on practice-based Fine Art research in one or more of the following:

  • painting
  • sculpture
  • textiles
  • printmaking (etching, silk screen, relief print)
  • digital art (video, animation, Photoshop, net.art, projection, installation)

The course is designed to support your studies and to enable you to strengthen your position as an artist. The move from undergraduate to postgraduate study is characterised by the depth and focus of research and with the increasing sophistication of a critically reflexive material practice.

The emphasis of postgraduate research is on the intensity of autonomous study coupled with and supported by rigorous debate and interaction with staff, visiting artists and fellow students.

The course aims to enable you to achieve a critical reflective practice where studio work becomes the testing ground of methods, genres, concepts and contexts and challenges the boundaries and relationship between theory and practice. For further information visit view Programme Rationale and description of the modules.

Attendance

All sessions are held at the Bishop Otter Campus in Chichester. Some modules operate from 1800hrs to 2100hrs midweek, some as weekend day schools, one as an intensive two-week summer school and some by arrangement with the tutors who organise the modules.

Full time – 12 months (September to September). Part time – 24 months (September to September)

Applications

We expect new MA Fine Art students to come with a good understanding of how they might fit within the broad context of contemporary fine art practice, and show ability to work confidently within this area.

We expect students to come with a certain momentum, a recognisable style of production (although this can of course develop), and a certain level of understanding of theory. You will be expected to write some essays on this course that relate strongly to your practice, so you will need to be reasonably confident with areas of contemporary art contexts, and be confident researching and writing in English.

All applicants will be interviewed and are expected to demonstrate an appropriate level of confidence through the presentation of work in a portfolio (or other appropriate documentation). Interviewees will be asked to present a proposal for intended studio based activity.

We welcome international applications and look forward to working with artists from a variety of nationalities, backgrounds, and experiences.

The Community of Artists

You will become part of a network of artists that will offer support and a challenging context for you in which to develop your work. Key amongst this community are the staff of the course. All of the staff are practicing artists and regularly exhibit their work. As established artists they are also linked into the local and regional networks of galleries, museums, regional agencies for funding and community based projects. Importantly the Art programs at the University of Chichester have strong connections with Pallant House Gallery, Goodwood Sculpture Park, galleries in Portsmouth, Southampton, Brighton and London. The sense of community within the University broadens to include the postgraduate and research students in MA Dance, MA Performance and MA Music and you will be able to experience the breadth of work through the program of research seminars, presentations, theatre events and visiting speakers that enrich the cultural and critical dimensions of the School of Visual and Performing Arts and the University.

Fine Art Staff

As practicing artists and researchers the Fine Art staff represent the broad range of contemporary practice. The ethos of Fine Art teaching at Chichester is one of open, inter-disciplinary. They are available for tutorials across personal practice as well as more specific discussion of material practice based skills. The course modules will be delivered by the staff team and visiting artists. View Fine Art staff profiles
