Equality and Diversity Policies

The University’s Equality and Diversity Policies set out our commitment to embed the principles of equality and diversity across our operation, recognising the importance that students, staff and visitors are treated fairly and with respect The Policies also seek to establish where responsibility for addressing equality lies.

Equality Scheme and Equality Objectives

To achieve an environment which is positive, engaging and beneficial for students, staff, partners and visitors of the University, the University believes that it is essential that its provision is inclusive and reflective of the diversity in which it operates.

The University’s Equality Scheme was produced after consulting students, staff and external organisations and partners, with the aim to set out an equality agenda and equality objectives over the next four years that supports the University’s Equality and Diversity Policy.

The Equality Scheme replaces the University’s Disability Equality Scheme and Gender Equality Scheme that were published in accordance with equality legislation that was in place before the Equality Act 2010. However, copies of the expired Schemes can be downloaded here.

The University’s Equality and Diversity Annual Report is a comprehensive account of how the Equality and Diversity Policy transposes to clear and progressive outcomes.

Stonewall

Stonewall Diversity ChampionThe University is a member of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions Programme, working to share and develop best practice amongst members to help deliver lesbian, gay and bisexual inclusive workplaces. Read news item

Positive About Disabled People

The symbol is awarded by Jobcentre Plus to employers in England, Scotland and Wales who have made commitments to employ, keep and develop the abilities of disabled staff.  In using this symbol it means that we are positive about employing disabled people and will be keen to know about an individual’s abilities.

There are five commitments to being awarded the symbol that the University has committed to regarding recruitment, training, retention, consultation and disability awareness:

  1. to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and to consider them on their abilities
  2. to discuss with disabled employees, at any time but at least once a year, what both parties can do to make sure disabled employees can develop and use their abilities
  3. to make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment
  4. to take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make these commitments work
  5. to review these commitments each year and assess what has been achieved, plan ways to improve on them and let employees and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans.

Support for students with a care background
