On this course we have one of the most experienced Creative Writing teams in the UK. Working with highly qualified and experienced tutors, many of whom are practising and published poets, novelists and dramatists, students can learn how language works and shapes our lives, explore new ways of reading and develop their portfolio of writing skills with a range of styles and techniques.

During the course you will have the opportunity to meet and learn from distinguished writers, and to participate in the vibrant writing culture that centres on the department. Carol Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage, Matthew Sweeney, Jo Shapcott, Patrick Garland and Janice Galloway are just some of the names that have recently visited the University of Chichester.

Chichester itself is an excellent environment in which to develop creative skills, boasting the prestigious Festival Theatre and the nationally renowned Chichester New Park Film Club.

Some Recent Student Writing Successes

Jeff Thomson's adaptation of Marlowe’s masterpiece, The Massacre of Paris was produced at The Rose in London. (Opening night was attended by representatives from The Globe and National Theatre).


Josephine Corcoran’s story ‘Algebra’ won the Ian St. James Competition and went on to be selected for broadcast by BBC Radio 4. Her play Jocasta was subsequently produced at The Chelsea Centre.


Isabel Ashdown published work in The Paris Review and won a prize in the Bridport short story competition while on the BA. She has recently published her first novel, Glasshopper (Myriad), which she completed while doing the MA in Creative Writing (2009).


Simon Lambert scooped the £1,000 prize in Good Housekeeping magazine's yearly fiction competition (2005).


Stephen Goldsmith has published his first collection Under Satan's Umbrella (Publish America, 2006). Many of the individual stories were first published in magazines in India, USA and the UK before they were brought together for this collection.
