Getting a Teaching Job - Annual AGCAS Publication
AGCAS's Getting a Teaching Job is a brilliant guide. It is available on the Prospects website as both web pages and a pdf file: www.prospects.ac.uk/links/teachingjob. It includes detailed advice on writing personal statements, a variety of teacher CV examples and everything you need to know about interviews.
Jobs

Agencies / Recruitment Companies
In the absence of a permanent teaching post it is well worth exploring the option of finding work through employment agencies. Many of the specialist teaching agencies are sensitive to the issues and needs of NQTs. More importantly, the opportunity to work in schools and to build on your existing expertise and experience can greatly help your job-search. Supply teachers often find the experience useful to build contacts and also gain greater insights into the kinds of schools and roles that suit them best.
We have listed some agencies below but you can quickly find many more either through a Google search or through www.yell.com (recruitment consultants).
www.alderwoodeducation.com offers supply teaching opportunities and temporary contract work.
www.randstad.com search under teaching jobs, to find positions in the local area and nationwide.
www.firebird-education.co.uk a local supply agency.

Induction and professional development
Induction
Information and resources for induction are available at: www.tta.gov.uk/induction and on the teaching unions' pages (links below).
Supply teaching can count towards induction. NQTs must be employed for at least one term and the school needs to be able to provide the required support. In England you can only work as a supply teacher for four terms before having to start induction.
Professional development
Teachernet is a brilliant site for professional and career development: www.teachernet.gov.uk.
Article from the TES about switching from secondary to primary teaching: www.tes.co.uk/article.aspx?storycode=2378313
Unions
These have some excellent pages for students and NQTs with careers information and advice as well as useful guidance on your induction year:

Association for Physical Education (afPE): www.afpe.org.uk - the only professional association for qualified PE teachers. The open web site is a rich source of information and the section for members has job vacancies and other invaluable information.
Teaching Overseas as a Qualified Teacher
If you want to teach overseas you will need to research the requirements and procedures for each country and area you are interested in. Requirements can be different within countries as well as between them so thorough research is essential. The teaching professional body for the country as well as local education departments should be good sources of information.
Generally requirements will favour fully qualified and experienced teachers.
The links below are specific to teaching overseas. More general information is available in our work and study abroad section - it covers country specific information and things to think about when moving overseas.
www.teachernet.gov.uk/professionaldevelopment/tipd/otheropports/ information from Teacher Net about International opportunities for teachers who are based in Britain.

www.vifprogram.com another option is cultural exchange. The Visiting International Faculty (VIF) program places UK teachers in America for up to three years.
(For information about working as an EFL teacher or being a volunteer teacher overseas see the working abroad / time out section).
Alternatives to Teaching
