Chris Dancer – Head of Business and Management |
Chris Dancer is Head of the School of Enterprise Management and Leadership (SEMAL) at the University of Chichester, and has been working full-time within higher education since 1996. Chris studied for his first degree in Cardiff and graduated with a degree in Economics, having specialised in banking and finance, in 1987. He then went on to join Barclays Bank PLC where he undertook a number of roles within their retail banking sector prior to becoming a corporate manager. He achieved associate member status of the Chartered Institute of Bankers during his employment within this sector. In 1994 Chris left the banking industry to study full-time on Southampton University’s MBA programme. On completion of this degree he moved into higher education where he was initially involved in the development and delivery of a degree in financial services. |
Viv Palmer – IT Management for Business Degree Coordinator |
Vivienne Palmer began teaching in Higher Education in January 1998, focusing primarily on teacher education and the appropriate use of ICT to enhance learning and teaching. She initially worked in Southampton and moved to the Bognor Regis campus in September 2001, developing and coordinating a special IT route as part of a four year teaching degree programme. This involved the development of 12 IT subject study modules. |
Dr Andrew Clegg – Programme Administrator for Tourism Management, Principal Lecturer for Learning and Teaching |
Andy Clegg started his academic career in 1989, registering for a BSc (Hons) Geography degree at the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Plymouth. After graduating in 1992, Andrew spent a year working in the Department of Geography and Geology at the Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education, as an open learning facilitator, where he was responsible for developing a wide range of flexible learning materials. In 1993, Andrew returned to the University of Plymouth to start his PhD, looking at the 'Recession as an Agent in the Restructuring of Tourist Accommodation in Torbay'. |
Dr David Cooper – Business Development Director |
Dave is the Business Development Director within the School of Enterprise Management and Leadership (SEMAL) and has been working for the University since 2003. In this role he is responsible for employer engagement activity and co-ordination of research provision within the department. This includes the development of CPD, consultancy, applied research, knowledge transfer and business support services. He teaches modules across information systems and business management disciplines, specialising in operations management, project management, systems analysis and business strategy. In addition he teaches strategic management to MA students in health and social care management. |
Chris Downs – Senior Lecturer in Economics |
Chris Downs teaches economics and business ethics, and is heavily involved in the level one modules that give all SEMAL’s undergraduate students the opportunity to focus on their own personal development and to work out for themselves what they might best do to maximise their benefit from their degree study. In particular, Chris has become adept at facilitating practical workshops in which students work on their skills in presenting to an audience. He is also interested in thinking skills, and anything that will encourage independent and critical thought. Chris would agree with Nietzsche that “the surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently." |
Dr Stephen Ellis - Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management |
Steve joined the university in 2010 from a senior role in the HR function within HSBC. He completed his PHD with University of Bradford which was subsequently published as a book on Knowledge Based Working. He also holds an MBA from Henley Management College and has published books on Organisational Behaviour and Flexible working for the CIPD. He was a key note speaker and masterclass presenter at the Singapore Information and Knowledge Management Society conference in 2009 and presented at the Innovation through Knowledge Transfer conference in the UK in 2010. Steve has worked in 10 countries and has managed significant HR change and development projects in the financial services and motor vehicle industries. Tim Friesner – Senior Lecturer in Marketing |
Tim Friesner is Senior Lecturer in Marketing and he leads the BA (Hons) Marketing degree route offered by the School of Enterprise, Management, and Leadership (SEMAL) at the University of Chichester. Tim teaches on modules including Multimedia Marketing, Introduction to Marketing, Business Strategy, eBusiness and Marketing Communications. Tim's employer engagement activities focus upon work-based learning, social media and multimedia marketing. He has been involved in projects for organisations including the Council for Voluntary Services (CVS), the Football Association (FA), INTERREG (an EU-funded programme that helps Europe’s regions form partnerships to work together on common projects) and a number of other small consultancy projects. |
Dr Jorge Gutic – Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management |
Originally an aquatic ecologist in his native Venezuela, Jorge became involved with tourism in 1989 while doing his Master degree in Sustainable Resource Management in the United Nations’ University for Peace in Costa Rica, a renowned ecotourism destination in Central America. Since then Jorge has been doing research and consultancy in different aspects of the tourism - environment interaction, including research on the economic value of wildlife to tourism, assessing the impacts of river tourism in indigenous communities of Venezuela’s Amazon rainforest, and the provision of training in interpretative and guiding skills for tourism guides and communities in national parks. During this period Jorge was involved with tourism and environmental management issues, both as a consultant and as a lecturer, in a number of Venezuelan institutions and universities. |
Dr Wendy Sealy - Senior Lecturer, Programme Co-ordinator |
Dr Wendy Sealy is Senior Lecturer and Programme Coordinator for the BA (Hons) Event Management in SEMAL. Dr Sealy has worked in the corporate event industry for over 20 years and has served in senior managerial positions for Marriott Hotels and Resorts in Barbados and the USA. She was also Groups and Incentives Manager for Almond Beach Resorts and the General Manager of Island Magic Barbados. She has staged and managed events for heads of state, royalty and large corporate entities including Bausch and Lomb, Glaxco Pharmaceuticals, American Express, Georgio Beverly Hills, General Portfolio, Carlson Marketing Group, Maritz Travel and many others. As well as working in the events industry, Dr Sealy has also worked in Marketing and Public Relations for many hospitality firms including the Bougainvillea Beach Resort and the Treasure Beach Barbados. |
Dr Lyn Batchelor - Senior Lecturer in Enterprise |
Lyn has considerable experience in developing and teaching Enterprise and Entrepreneurship courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, actively working to develop a culture of enterprise and innovation in higher education institutions. This year she will launch a Module available to students across all faculties wanting to start a business while at the University, or who will move to self-employment as a career option after graduation. |
Paul is Senior Lecturer in Information Systems Management joining the university in 2010 having graduated with an MSc in Information Systems from Portsmouth University. Paul has worked in variety of industries including music, pharmaceutical and IT. Additionally Paul has created, traded and sold as going concerns businesses in both the travel and catering worlds. Through his working career Information Systems (IS) has been a major theme and has considerable experience of developing, training people in, and using a variety of systems. Paul’s main research interests focus on the potential that the computing cloud has for business and collaborative working and data quality to enable better decision making. |
Dr Michel Leseure - Senior Lecturer in Operations Management |
Michel first graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from France before studying business in the United States (MBA) and operations management in the UK (PhD, University of Sheffield). Michel has worked for Loughborough University, Al Akhawayn University (Morocco), Aston Business School, Plymouth Business School and the Isle of Man International Business School.

David Simmonds - Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management |
David Simmonds is involved with teaching and research in the area of Human Resource Management and Development at University of Chichester, and has been teaching full-time in higher education since 1989. David studied for his first degree in London and graduated with a degree in Education, having specialised in languages, in 1974. He then went on to join British Telecom where he undertook a number of training and development roles at their headquarters. He later developed his career in the NHS, several financial services organisations, and an SME in the IT sector. He achieved member status of the Institute of Training and Development and rose to the level of Training Director. He studied part-time to achieve an M.Sc. in HRD. He runs two learning consultancies and has undertaken assignments in the private, public and voluntary sectors. David has been involved in leadership development programmes; large change management schemes; individual executive coaching and mentoring; knowledge management plans; and blended learning applications. He has 15 years’ experience as a volunteer counsellor. |
Jennie White, Senior Lecturer in Marketing, has a degree in Agricultural Economics from Reading University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. Jennie's early career was spent with ICI Agrochemicals, initially as a Database Administrator for their competitor database and then as the territory manager for Somerset. After 6 years with ICI, she joined the IT industry as an Account Manager for companies selling software for data mining and customer relationship management. In 1999, Jennie started lecturing for Bournemouth University's Business School and left to join the University of Chichester in September 2010. She is an award-winning lecturer, having gained recognition four times for outstanding contribution to student learning for online seminar delivery, online lectures via video and MP3, interactive discussion boards and research support. Jennie has recently completed the Chartered Institute of Marketing's Diploma in Digital Marketing. |
David is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (FCCA) and has an MBA from Southampton University. He joined the University of Chichester in August 2011. David’s early career began in industry with time spent in the accounting function of various companies including Norcross plc and the Prudential plc. His academic career began in 1990 when he accepted a post at Bournemouth Polytechnic, the precursor to what is now Bournemouth University, and over the years David has taught many cohorts of undergraduate and postgraduate students both on generalist and specialist programmes of study. |
