Teaching Courses
All applicants to BA (Hons) courses with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and PGCE courses must hold at least 5 GCSE level passes (A to C grades) including English and Mathematics. Primary Teaching Candidates born after 1 September 1979 must also hold a GCSE level pass (A to C grade) in a science subject. Secondary teacher training courses do not have this science requirement.
Equivalent qualifications will be considered by the University.
Suitable applicants to Teacher Training courses will be called for interview and will be required to gain at least 2 weeks experience in a State School (of the relevant age range to the course) prior to interview. Successful applicants will also have to obtain a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check and complete a medical check. Please see below for information on interviews and CRB and medical checks.
Interview/Audition
Interviews are a mandatory part of the application process for the following;
- Teacher Education
- Social Work
- Counselling
- Childhood Studies
- Youth work related courses
- Music related courses
- Performing Arts
- Dance
- Some Fine Art applicants are also invited to interview
Many Postgraduate courses will also request an interview.
The interviews and auditions are designed to assess the applicant’s suitability for their chosen course through individual or group activities presentations and/or solo performances.
Decisions based on interview performance will normally be communicated within one week of the date of the interview.
Medical checks
All successful candidates for teacher training and Social Work courses are required to verify that their mental and physical health is deemed to be satisfactory by the institution Doctor, before beginning their studies. Failure to complete this requirement will result in the withdrawal of the candidate’s place.
Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks
All successful candidates for teacher training and related courses where placement involves contact with children or vulnerable adults, are required to complete and sign a Criminal Records Bureau 'Enhanced Declaration' before beginning their studies. Failure to complete this requirement will result in the withdrawal of the candidate’s place.

Documentary Evidence
All offers of a place on our courses are subject to proof of the applicants’ qualifications as declared on the application form. This includes examinations taken at GCSE/O-level standard. Failure to provide evidence of the qualification declared prior to the commencement of the course may result in the withdrawal of the candidates place.
If you no longer hold your certificates or have lost them you will have to apply to the institution/school/college where the qualifications were obtained to request copies or a letter of confirmation (on official headed paper) to confirm your results. If this is not possible and/or the institution no longer exists, please apply to the relevant Examining Body ie; EDEXCEL, AQA etc, for copies of certificates.
Age Regulations
The University courses must have reached the age of 18 years by 1st September in the year of Admission. Applications from candidates under this age WILL NOT be considered.
There is no upper age limit for applicants to join Chichester courses. However, candidates over the age of 53 may have difficulty in securing funding from their Local Education Authority. Please visit www.dfes.gov.uk for more information on Higher Education Finance
