BA (hons) International English Studies

What is the Joint/Minor in International English Studies (IES)?
IES is a joint (50%) or minor (25%) subject which can be taken with a large range of undergraduate degree courses.
What other subjects can I study?
You can combine IES with the following subjects:
- Business Studies
- Tourism Management
- IT – Management & Organisations
- Media Studies
- Fine Art
- Performing Arts
- Music
- Dance
- History
- Theology
- Event Management
- Marketing
- Finance
What are the entry requirements?
- You must speak a first language other than English
- You must have successfully completed your secondary education, usually to age 18
- You must have a certificated English level of proficiency of at least IELTS 5.5 / TOEFL 530 or equivalent
OR
- Have successfully completed Chichester’s Pre-Sessional Programme
Please note: candidates also need to meet the entry requirements of their other subject.
How long is the programme?
You can choose to study for 1, 2 or 3 academic years. It is possible to follow a 1 year programme or a ‘year abroad’ as part of your studies at your home university.
If you are already studying at a university in your home country, you may be able to arrange credit for the courses you study at Chichester.
What qualification will I get?
- 3 years of study - BA (Hons) chosen subject and/with IES
- 2 years of study - Diploma of Higher Education
- 1 year of study - Certificate of Higher Education
When can I start?
All degree programmes start in September each year.
What does the programme involve?
IES Joint students take 2 pathways:
- English Language Studies to develop your use and awareness of the English language to a high level of competence with special relevance to academic study.
- Language and Culture, which allows you, by examining certain key aspects of British culture, to investigate the relationship between language and culture.
IES 'Minor' students take only the English Language Studies pathway.
What level of English proficiency will I achieve?
After three years of study on the programme you should reach a high level of proficiency equivalent to IELTS 8-9, or ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe) level 5+.
